A horizon line for automation telemetry

We treat API automation as a journey with measurable hops—not a black box named after the scheduler that started it.

1. Trace the lane

We sit with the owners of one critical automation path and draw the sequence of API calls, queues, and hand-offs. The diagram becomes the spine of every later metric.

2. Place timers honestly

We mark where duration should be recorded: before the first request, after each dependency, and at business completion—not only when the job process exits.

3. Separate retries from reality

Silent retries inflate success rates. We count attempts, backoff gaps, and the upstream status that forced them so dashboards stop celebrating delayed work.

4. Publish a scorecard humans can argue with

Weekly or monthly views show latency bands, throughput, and SLA misses with enough context that automation and API teams can own different slices.

What you walk away with

A shared vocabulary for automation performance, a short instrumentation backlog, and a scorecard format your ops review can reuse. No product licence—just measurement work you can keep running.
